PFS StandardNocticula (The Redeemer Queen)

Source Pathfinder Adventure Path #219: Lord of the Trinity Star pg. 67
It’s perhaps no surprise that the Redeemer Queen— protector of society’s outcasts and patron to its marginalized artists—is herself a product of redemption. Once feared as the demon lord of assassins, darkness, and lust, Nocticula left her past behind during her ascension to divinity and dedicated herself to her new role as a guardian of exiles, defender of artists, and champion of midnight.

Ascending from demon lord to god is no common thing, and many theories exist as to what prompted the change. Some believe that in the wake of all the havoc wreaked by her pursuit of power, Nocticula gained an admiration for those who remained true to their ideals, even when it cost them their lives or livelihoods. Others say that she encountered something of such beauty that it shifted her perspective on the world, an experience that has carried over to her new affinity for artists. Those of a more cynical bent whisper that Nocticula simply grew disenchanted with her existence as a demon lord and accidently ascended to godhood through a unique twist of cosmic chance.

The truth of why Nocticula ascended and abandoned her demonic legacy, like the exact circumstances of her transformation, may never be fully known. Nocticula herself does not speak on the matter, and the Cult of the Redeemer Queen, whose heretical beliefs long predated her unprecedented change of heart, preaches that both the reason for and methods of her ascension are equally irrelevant; the focus should be not on who Nocticula once was, but on who she has become.

Whatever the true impetus for Nocticula’s shift from demon to divine, not all are pleased with the outcome. Those who previously worshipped Nocticula as a demon lord wait in vain for her to tire of her new role and return to her previous home in the Midnight Isles. Meanwhile, her former peers view her as a greater threat than before and fear that she plans to turn them from their current pursuits in the Outer Rifts to new, redemptive paths.

Nocticula cares little for how others perceive her, noting their disapproval only insofar as it helps her to understand the suspicion and disregard often faced by her followers. Steadfast in the choices she’s made and proud of her new life, she lends her strength, protection, and sense of purpose to those who live and create as they see fit and celebrates the change and challenges they bring to the world around them.
